Zone

The Zone is a low-profile, overstable putt and approach disc that has defined that slot since its release in 2008. It has a beadless rim, shallow rim, and flat top that make it comfortable for forehand and backhand throws, and a high degree of torque resistance. It can be used for hyzers, flex shots, straight drives with a consistent fade, and even putting. The Zone’s low profile makes it excel at fighting wind, and its flight characteristics make it quite versatile.

In 2008, there was not really such a thing as an overstable approach disc that fit somewhere between a putter or mid, as many approach discs do today. That all changed when Michael Johansen asked Discraft to make one, which resulted in the Zone. At the time though, many still did not see its potential, and it was popular enough to stay in stock, but not much more than that. That all changed when Paul McBeth signed with Discraft and began using Zones for approaches that he previously would’ve used a Firebird or Destroyer for, and Zones became one of Discraft’s (and disc golf’s) best-selling discs.

Almost every pro that is sponsored by Discraft throws a Zone, including McBeth, Anthony Barela, and Aaron Gossage. Almost every major disc manufacturer has made their own take on the Zone that their players now throw. The Zone, without a doubt, is one of the most influential discs in the sport, as it helped change the way players view upshots and approaches to this day. Seeing as the Zone has become so popular, there are also some highly collectible runs of Zones, such as McBeth 4x, 5x, and 6x Zones, as well as early Supercolor and glow Zones.
