Magnet

Released in 1992, the Magnet was the first true putter designed by Discraft, and it is the oldest Discraft mold still in production.

The Magnet was a sign that Discraft had intentions to make a full lineup of discs, as it was the first non-driver made by the brand. (Obviously, the Phantom, Phantom+, and Deuce are considered putters now, but at the time they were labeled as drivers/mids). Almost every Discraft professional in the 90s putted with a Magnet. In the late 90s Discraft released the APX and in the 2000s discs like the Challenger and Focus took over as the flagship putters for Discraft. In more recent times, discs like the Luna and Roach have also taken from the Magnet’s market share.

For most of its history the Magnet was offered in Hard and Soft Pro-D, however recently Discraft has rebranded their baseline plastic as “putter line.” However, Hard and Soft Putter Line Magnets are still made. Discraft has made premium Magnets in small batches, but they never have in full production. Which makes Z and Crystal Z Magnets valuable as a collector’s item. Very recently Discraft has started to make ESP Magnets as well, albeit still in limited runs. The Magnet’s original stamp featured a disc golf basket and older runs of the Magnet had 4 chains visible on the stamp. Later runs only had 3, making the 4 chain Magnets a collector’s item.

Magnets have a somewhat unique hand feel, as they have a concave rim like an Innova Roc, but on a putter. Concave putters are very uncommon these days with blunter molds like the Aviar being more common. Magnets are also fairly deep, which was common for putters released before 2000. With those two factors in mind, the Magnet is often viewed as an “old school” putter. But it still does see some use on the disc golf pro tour.
